UL94 Standard-Compliant Fume Chamber

The AmadeTech UL94 Flame Chamber features a spacious 0.75 m³ enclosure, housing the burner, fixtures, and calibration tools in a draft-free environment to ensure test integrity. Constructed from 304 stainless steel, the chamber’s interior is finished in matte black (gloss level < 20 lx) to minimize reflections. Integrated interior lighting assists with specimen setup, while a high-capacity exhaust fan safely removes fumes and toxic gases post-test.

The front of the chamber features a up-and-down sliding, heat-resistant glass window for clear observation. Ergonomic access is provided via two rubber-curtained ports. These allow the operator to manually control the Bunsen burner’s horizontal displacement—moving it toward the specimen for ignition or withdrawing it—and provide manual access to the interior during testing.

ASTM D5025 Standard Compliant Bunsen Burner

AmadeTech’s UL94 tester utilize a Bunsen burner available in 50W and 500W configurations to accommodate diverse test protocols. Fully compliant with ASTM D5025, the burner features a 100±10 mm tube with a 9.5±0.3 mm internal diameter. The burner can be manually tilted to 20° or 45° and secured via a precision limit device.

The burner has one-key ignition and an automatic ignition function. According to different test needs, you can adjust the flame state and height by turning the corresponding adjustment switches of the equipment. You need to move the burner horizontally to the ignition position of the sample to apply the flame. When the specified flame application time is reached, the burner’s flame will go out automatically.

Flexible Fixture Assemblies

Designed for multi-purpose utility, this chamber supports a variety of fixture configurations. Users can easily switch between horizontal and vertical test setups. The specimen holders provide multi-axis adjustment (up/down, forward/backward, left/right) to ensure perfect positioning.

The machine is equipped with a vertical clamp to hold a vertically standard bar specimen for vertical combustion testing, and a horizontal wire gauze and support bar for mounting specimens for horizontal combustion testing.

Integrated PLC Control System

The AmadeTech UL94 tester is equipped with an advanced PLC-controlled touchscreen interface. This centralized Human-Machine Interface (HMI) integrates all machine operations and data displays, allowing for seamless, one-touch switching between different test protocols. The system features pre-configured test sequences based on international standards, providing dedicated virtual buttons for each specific test item. This automation allows operators to focus entirely on observing the specimen; with a single press, the system accurately captures critical data such as afterflame and afterglow times, significantly reducing manual error and streamlining the testing process.

Integrated Flame Calibration System

To ensure absolute measurement accuracy, the machine features built-in flame temperature calibration devices. The chamber houses two sets of high-precision K-type thermocouples and standardized copper blocks, specifically designed for calibrating both 50W and 500W flames. During the calibration process, the system monitors the temperature rise in real-time. Once the calibration sequence is initiated, the integrated timer automatically records the duration required for the copper block to reach specific temperature benchmarks.

  • For a 50W flame: The system verifies a rise from 100±5°C to 700±3°C within 44±2 seconds.
  • For a 500W flame: The system verifies a rise from 100±5°C to 700±3°C within 54±2 seconds.

If the calibration temperature does not meet the standard, you need to continue adjusting the flame height and status for a new cycle of calibration until the test standard is reached.

In addition, AmadeTech can also provide more flame retardant testing equipment for plastic materials, such as:

Oxygen Index Tester

Glow Wire Tester

Needle Flame Tester

Test Principle

A plastic specimen of specific dimensions is secured within a fixture at a standardized angle and orientation. A high-precision burner delivers a controlled flame to a preset position for a designated duration. Once the flame is removed, the specimen’s behavior is monitored. The system records and displays critical metrics, including afterflame time, afterglow time, and burn length, facilitating precise comparisons and compliance calculations.

FAQs

UL94 horizontal (HB) and vertical burning (V-0, V-1, V-2, 5VA or 5VB) tests are suitable for all solid plastic materials used for parts in devices and appliances.

The primary purpose of performing UL94 horizontal and vertical combustion tests is to test the flammability of plastics used to manufacture equipment and appliances so that the results will be used as the most basic indicators to evaluate whether there is a fire risk during use. Secondly, this test can help researchers to master the burning characteristics of materials. By comparing the relative flammability of different materials or analyzing the differences in the burning characteristics of materials with different formulations, it can help people find the most suitable material to achieve the expected flame-retardant effect.

(1) Ignition and flammability: that is, the difficulty of being ignited.
(2) Flame propagation speed: that is, the speed at which the flame spreads along the surface of the material.
(3) Fire resistance: the speed at which fire penetrates a material component.
(4) Release rate (HRR): that is, the heat released and the speed released when the material burns.
(5) Difficulty of self-extinguishing.
(6) Smoke generation: including the amount of smoke produced, the release speed of smoke, and the composition of smoke.
(7) Generation of toxic gas: including gas volume, release rate, and composition.

The flammability characteristics of a plastic material determined by the UL94 burning test are only used as a preliminary indication of its acceptability for a particular application. It should not be assumed to correlate with its performance in end-use applications.

  • Among the combustion test methods of flame retardant materials, the most representative and widely used ones are the oxygen index and UL94 flame retardant tests. Although both can test the burning characteristics of materials, their testing principles and methods are different.
  • The former oxygen index (OI) test is to determine the lowest oxygen concentration required for the flaming combustion of materials in an oxygen-nitrogen mixed flow under specified conditions. It is expressed as the numerical value of the volume percentage of oxygen. Generally speaking, the higher the oxygen index of a material, the higher the oxygen concentration required to catch fire, and the less likely it is to be ignited. On the contrary, the material has a low oxygen index, and it is easy to reach the ignition point under low oxygen concentration, so it is easy to be ignited.
  • The latter UL94 test is to directly expose the sample in the specified posture to the standard atmospheric environment to perform the ignition action for a specified time. After removing the source of ignition, the state of combustion of the material itself is observed. The flame (afterflow) duration of the material with better flame retardancy is shorter, and conversely, the flame duration of the material with poorer flame retardancy is longer.

Changing samples is very easy and convenient. You just need to loosen the screws on the clamp, insert the clamping end of the sample directly into the mounting position of the clamp, and then tighten the screws.

Yes, the combustion products and toxic gases from the sample can be extracted from the machine and discharged from the laboratory through an exhaust pipe. Our testing equipment is equipped with a blower that can directly extract the waste gas from the chamber, and there is a circular exhaust port on the top of the equipment. This port is used to connect to an exhaust pipe, which in turn connects to the main exhaust vent of the laboratory.

Our standard machine comes with a Bunsen burner manufactured by AMADETECH. It has a tube with a length of 100±10 mm and an internal diameter of 9.5±0.3 mm. The barrel is not equipped with an end attachment, such as a stabilizer. The burner is strictly designed in compliance with ASTM D5025. If you require the Humboldt H-5025 burner, please inform us of your specific needs in your enquiry.

Accessories included with the equipment include horizontal and vertical combustion test fixtures, 50W and 500W flame gauges, a spacing gauge for the sample and the top of the Bunsen burner tube, an exhaust pipe, a gas pipe, etc.

Yes, we can provide this service.

If needed, we can send the equipment to a professional third-party laboratory or have professionals come to our site to perform the relevant data calibration. After calibration, the third-party laboratory will issue a calibration report. Please note that third-party calibration will incur an additional fee.

The test chamber requires a supply of technical grade methane gas (min. 98 percent pure) with regulator and meter for uniform gas flow. This needs to be provided by the users.
