UV accelerated weathering tester is a type of environmental test chamber to determine the resistance of plastics, leathers, rubbers, fabrics, etc., to weathering under the specified conditions.

We know that Ultraviolet light only accounts for 7% of the total sunlight, but it plays a core role in the deterioration of materials. UV weathering test is an essential measure for people to research and understand the degradation state of materials in advance as time goes on.

It is applicable to nonmetallic materials and organic materials such as Paint, ink, paint, rubber, plastic and their products.

Test Principle

The UV Accelerated Weathering Tester uses fluorescent ultraviolet lamps as the light source, and simulates environmental conditions such as ultraviolet, rain, high temperature, high humidity, condensation, and darkness in the natural climate. By reproducing these conditions, combining them into a cycle, and let it automatically complete the number of cycles, so as to accelerate the aging process of the test sample to evaluate the weathering resistance of the tested sample.

A standard UVA-340 or an optional UVB-313 fluorescent ultraviolet lamp is used as the light source to simulate the sunlight, and the dew is created by means of the condensation of moisture. Test pieces are alternately exposed to fluorescent UV light and condensation environment at a given temperature. The test pieces’ changes in the property during a few days or months in the UV test chamber are equivalent to that caused over months or years in the natural environment.

UV test chamber accelerates the course of weathering to obtain the ability of the specimen to resist fading, discoloration, tarnish, powdering, cracking, turbidity, bubbling, embrittlement, recession and oxidization. The test machine monitors the temperature of the black panel and water tank during the test. Irradiance can be measured and controlled to extend the working life of the ultraviolet lamp if the chamber is fitted with a UV radiometer.

UV Weathering Test Chamber Features

  1. Rigid housing is formed from precision 304 stainless steel sheets.
  2. Air flue in a circle system enhances the air volume and heating ability for optimizing the temperature uniformity inside the chamber.

  5. A black panel thermometer controls the temperature automatically, and BPT consists of a PT100 sensor and a metal panel with a black coating.

  8. The USB interface allows the operator to export all test data by U disk or RS 232 for communication.

1. Temperature Control Part

Temperature control is also very important for ultraviolet light aging test. When irradiated by ultraviolet light, temperature does not participate in the photochemical reaction of the test material, but temperature can affect the rate of light reaction. Generally, The rate of light reaction becomes faster as the temperature increases. Therefore, temperature control also becomes very important when irradiating ultraviolet light. During the UV aging test, the appropriate temperature can be selected according to the intensity of the UV light, and it is generally set between 50°C and 80°C. In addition, the blast system is used to make the temperature distribution in the box more uniform.

2. Wetting Cycle Part

The humidity of the air can also affect the aging and corrosion of the experimental materials, and the aging caused by the humidity is accelerated with the rise of temperature. Therefore, temperature control in a specific humidity environment can also achieve good corrosion and aging effects. In the UV aging tester, the temperature during the condensation process is controlled between 40 and 60°C. Because condensation and light are in different test stages, the temperature during condensation is different from the temperature used during ultraviolet light irradiation.

3. Ultraviolet Light Irradiation Part

The main core function of the ultraviolet light aging tester is ultraviolet light irradiation, which simulates the most harmful ultraviolet light in sunlight. The ultraviolet light content in sunlight is only 7%, but the main factor of aging in the natural environment is the effect of ultraviolet light. In the aging test, generally only need to simulate the ultraviolet light. When testing the material, the test material needs to be covered by the ultraviolet light in all directions. At present, the ultraviolet light aging test machine can carry out the full coverage of ultraviolet light.

4.Rain and Dew Condensation Part

The rain and dew condensation function of the UV aging tester mainly simulates the rain and dew in the natural environment. In the test box, the water in the water storage tank at the lower part of the shell is heated to generate a large amount of water vapor to keep the humidity in the box at 100%. The high-temperature water vapor condenses on the surface of the test sample to produce a condensation effect, which can produce a galvanic corrosion effect on the test product. In the process of rain and dew condensation, the general test needs to last for 12 hours to see obvious results.

Both UVA-340 and UVB-313 emit UV lights, but they have different light emission spectrums.

  • The luminescence spectrum of the UVA-340 tube ranges from 315nm to 400nm, which is mainly focused on wavelengths 340nm. UVA-340 tube is the optimum choice for simulation of UV in solar light during the noon of summer, which is also recommended in most UV tests.
  • The emission spectrum of the UVB-313 tube is in the scope from 280 to 315nm, which is concentrated on wavelengths 313nm. It is much stronger than any spectrum existing in the sunlight on the earth, featuring  the maximization of accelerating the weathering during the test, which is beyond the intensity of spectrum existing in a real environment, with harm to specimens.

Because the energy output of fluorescent UV lamp decays over time, in order to reduce its negative effect, we suggest replacing an old tube with a new tube at intervals of 1/4 lifetime of the fluorescent lamp, so that the light source of 8 tubes is always made up of new lights and old lights to get a constant light irradiance.
