Klemm Water Absorption Tester for Paper and Board

Klemm Capillary Rise Tester is used to determine the water absorptiveness of unsized paper and paperboard by measuring the capillary liquid absorption height using the Klemm method. The test result is indicated by the height of the vertical rise of the liquid in the sample due to the capillary phenomenon within the specified time or by the time required for the sample to absorb liquid to rise a certain height.

It is suitable for blotting papers and other papers having a relatively high water absorbency and is not recommended for samples whose capillary water absorption height is less than 5 mm in 10 minutes. Suppose your samples are sized paper, paperboard, and corrugated fibreboard. You need to use AT-P8006 Cobb sizing tester to perform the water absorption test in compliance with standards of ISO 535, EN 20535, TAPPI-T441 or JIS-P8140.

This Klemm capillary rise tester is equipped with five stainless steel rulers with a minimum graduation of 1 mm in a perpendicular position. Specimens are allowed to be clamped to the rulers, and both can be lowered and raised together by means of turning the control rod. The starting point of the rulers aligns with the water level when they are lowed, which facilitates you to read the capillary rise value during the test.

Klemm Water Absorbency Test Principle

a strip-shaped specimen of the specified dimensions is hung vertically. The specimen is lowered, allowing its bottom to be immersed in water for a specified period of time, such as 10 minutes. Finally, the height of the water rise is measured to express the Klemm rise value.

Test Procedure of Klemm Capillary Rise Test on Paper

  1. Prepare 5 pcs of 15 x 250 mm standard samples and distilled water or deionized water, or other solutions required by the test standard.
  2. Clamp each of the sample strips in the small clips of the machine, then dip the samples vertically in the water so that the depth of immersion is exactly 5mm, and simultaneously start the timer.
  3. Read the heights of the capillary rise after 10 minutes.
  4. Record the capillary liquid absorption heights of 5 samples in the vertical directions, then calculate the average value as the test result.

Notes:

  • The height of the capillary liquid absorption should be accurate to 1 mm.
  • If there is a special agreement, it should follow the specific liquid absorption time. It doesn’t have to be 10 minutes.
  • If the wetting line of the liquid rising is inclined or curled, the average height should be selected. If the absorption speed of the inner and outer layers of the multilayer cardboard is different, the test value should be expressed as the average value.
  • The length of the paper strip immersed in the liquid can be appropriately extended according to the product standard.
  • If the sample is curled, a small clip can be used to hang on the lower end of the sample, and it must be ensured that the sample is not stretched or broken when wet.
